Thor: Love and Thunder Review

Thor 4, who would have thought for all the MCU characters to get a fourth movie it would be Thor but after Ragnarok here we are and while it can't quite reach those highs its still pretty good despite some issues. Thor Love and Thunder picks up sometime after Endgame, Thor and Korg are hanging with the Guardians of the Galaxy, he has shed is Endgame bod and is going through a bit of mid-life crisis or as much as a midlife crisis you can have as a several hundred year old god. Back on earth Valkyrie leads Asgard as its king and Asgard is now a tourist attraction. We also see Natalie Portman's Jane Foster return diagnosed with stage 4 cancer she's is looking for a way to buy time/beat the cancer but things are not looking great. We are also introduced to our villain Gorr though for someone called the God Butcher we don’t see him kill a ton of Gods in this movie. As things move a long and we get eventually introduced to Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor, we see Gorr attack Asgard and we eventually have our main crew of Thor, Jane Foster, Valkyrie and Korg on a quest to defeat Gorr.

There are some amazing parts especially the stuff exploring Thor and Jane's relationship, fun details on Asgard and the location where the second act takes place is full of amazing easter eggs and references quite a few tailored for the AU/NZ audience. However especially at the beginning the structure and pacing is a bit off, we jump around here and there, I also don’t think this main crew is as good as the Ragnarok crew. Nothing is necessarily bad unless you want to knit pick CG or certain jokes but yeah it does feel rougher than Ragnarok. As things move a long things get a lot better and going into Act 2 and the later parts of the movie things come together pretty well. Love and Thunder has some Romantic Comedy vibes and Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman do a great job with it. The ending is done pretty well, very much in the vein of a Jojo Rabbit/Hunt for the Wilderpeople maybe not as crisp as either of those but it works well and definitely gives new context to the very heavy Guns and Roses soundtrack of the movie.

Anyway yeah the movie is pretty good though not as good as Ragnarok. At times the movie can feel like a bit of a retread of Ragnarok and lesser one at that but buy the end things work out and any issues from act one are made up for with how things end up. Definitely has some crown pleasing moments and I think most people will enjoy it, it's not Ragnarok but its still pretty good.

7.5/10

Other notes

Stagecraft - so this is I think the first MCU movie to use stagecraft and for the most part I think its fine though I think there are things here and there that are a bit off, might just be some not ideal CG. Im sure as people get used to it things will look better.

Revengers vs Thor 4 crew - as great as Natalie Portman is the revengers I think were a much better group and that team especially Loki and Hulk you feel them missing.

Valkyrie love interest - So I think this movie was supposed to give her a love interest but spoilers aside from her kissing the hand of one of Zeus's hand maidens we don’t see anything. I think this plot point may have been cut.
