Everything Everywhere All at Once Review

Everything everywhere all at once is a sci-fi action film from the Daniels and it's probably the best multiverse movie so far just as multiverse movies have started to become a thing. EEAO centers on a Chinese American woman Evelyn Wang played by Michelle Yeoh who runs a laundromat with her husband. The laundromat is being audited, her father has just arrived from China, her husband is looking to get a divorce and he daughter is gay and trying to get the family to accept he girlfriend. So yeah there is a lot going on, its not the best situation and in the midst of this is visited by another version of her husband who drags her into a multiversal conflict.

I know it sounds jarring but its fucking amazing and probably the best movie I've seen this year so far. It plays with the multiverse concept in such creative and inventive ways. There are so many interesting, thoughtful and creative variations of the characters drawing from pop culture, Michelle Yeohs career and some of the most random shit you can think of. I also have to point out how much of this movie takes place in just a laundromat and IRS building but still runs away with the multiverse concept.

As much as the multiverse execution is amazing in the movie it really ends up about these character relationships and dealing with those regrets and decisions in one's life that lead you to where you are. One of the themes of this movie is nihilism which without spoiling too much is something that isn't hard to get to when your examining the multiverse especially when you can travel through it. Yet the movie ends up presenting a message that’s is a lot of sincere and optimistic than one would expect.

An amazing movie with an amazing movie poster

There is a part of me that thinks that if you watch the trailer you can kind of see what the movie is going for beyond its presentation of the multiverse and while I don’t think you should win a prize for guessing the journey here is so bonkers, creative. It's hilarious, there is some amazing action, the performances are great the creativity is off the charts. I don’t want to disregard the message but damn the journey is amazing.

With the ongoing pandemic and success of Spiderman, the upcoming Dr. Strange movie etc there is a thought that multiverse genre or concept could become trendy/prevalent in media much like patriotism was a thing post 9/11, zombie movies occupied a space on pop culture for time. The thought being it that the multiverse could be a way to deal with the pandemic not just in imagining a world where it did not happen, but all the possibilities that we could have had in those 2ish years that we sort of collectively lost. It's very funny to see this movie hit now because it kind of does the best version of the multiverse just as the concept is getting off the ground.

I know this movie has not had a huge release but it definitely worth checking out and I think it's worth watching in theaters I feel the reactions of your fellow moviegowers enhance the experience so check it out if you can it's worth it.
